Mechanical Monday

Friday we decided to go get another engine for our Scion Tc. We don't need an engine but its more for play than anything. We are planning on building one with aftermarket parts, so it will hold more horsepower and use the other one as a back up if we blow up the good one.

I know this sounds ridiculous and a waste of money but it was not. I was lucky enough to find one wrecked model in the junk yard. It is hard to find a TC engine in Florida but once I found it and found out the price I left it. The man told us $1100 and of course we have to pull it ourselves. Well to get the engine out you would need to cut the frame and lots of other stuff to get it out of the car. I went home and it sat there for maybe 3 months.

Friday January 30, 2009 we decide to go back and we talked the man down to $650 and a $50 core charge. Now that is a price I can live with and I told the man I'll be back next week.

Friday February 6,2009 we got up at 7am to get ready to go get our engine. We got our two best friends Jeremy and Alex and headed to the junk yard. So we are pulling out our IDs to get in letting the woman know which car we were there to take parts off of and she told us that it would cost $550 and a $50 core charge. Now I was excited!

We took out the engine and decided to get the S-Pipe and Air Box and went to pay for the items. We ended up paying $630 total; no core charge, $25 for the S-Pipe, gave us the Air Box and the rest were taxes and fees. Now if that wasn't thrifty car part shopping I don't know what is.

This is why I always say talk down the price, it usually works.
