Do It Yourself Repairs

One of the best ways to save money when it comes down to car repairs is to do it yourself. Now I'm not talking about the big jobs like ball joints, I mean the simple ones like replacing your battery. There are some repairs that you still can do at home on your own.

1. The Simpler the Better. One mistake people make is trying to take on a big repair. Start with the easiest repair first this was you will feel confident enough to tackle another. This is a list of basic repairs to start from:
  • Replace the Wiper Blades
  • Change the Air filter
  • Change a Headlight
  • Change a Battery
  • Change a Tire
  • Checking and Change the Oil

2. Have the Right Tools. Before you start taking apart your car make sure you have the right tools. Unless you are a mechanic you won't have all the right tools you need so try to start your repair early so that you can go to the auto parts store for any additional items. These are the basic tools your should always have on hand:
  • A set of socket wrenches
  • A set of open-end and box wrenches
  • Screwdrivers
  • Pliers
  • Whatever special tools that are necessary for the job you're completing.
3. Research Your Repair. Do a little research on the repair your contemplating. Refer to your owners manual and look it up online. YouTube is a great way to find videos on auto repairs and maintenance.

4. Ask for Help. If you made a mistake ask for help, don't feel ashamed that your first DIY project didn't go so well. Call your local shop and explain the situation, they will be more then glad to give you some advice on how to fix the error.

Great tips! I always let my husband take care of our automobile troubles. But it is always wise to do it yourself if you are able and if you want to save money.

I recently tried to change my wiper blades and after a 20 minute struggle I finally gave up and took the car to a Valvoline oil change place and they put them on in 15 seconds for free! I will never try to do it myself again! Even if I would have had to pay for it, it would have been worth it.
